Digital Communities and infertility

A variety of blogs and online sites written by and for women dealing with fertility issues

Location: Online (virtual research)

role: Ethnographer

Overview

Through virtual ethnographic research, I investigated how blogs, discussion boards, and other sites become a way for individuals dealing with infertility to learn about their conditions, form connections with people in similar situations, teach others about their experiences, and advocate for political and scientific action. This research culminated in a paper titled “‘Thank You for Sharing Your Story (Even With the Gory Details)’: Intersections Between Infertility Blogs, Biosocialities, and Knowledge,” in which I explored how such blogs represent a shift in the construction and functioning of networks, as well as in productions of knowledge and power.
